Inter have sounded out former AC Milan and Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri as a target should Antonio Conte walk away this summer, according to Italian journalist Ciro Venerato.

Conte has led the Nerazzurri to a first Scudetto since 2010 this season, but his future remains in doubt amidst suggestions that owners Suning will look to reduce costs and sell key players.

Speaking on Italian radio station Radio Kiss Kiss yesterday, Venerato discussed Napoli’s plans to replace Gennaro Gattuso next term and suggested that Allegri would refuse, with potential interest from Inter.

“We are just at the beginning. This time [President Aurelio] De Laurentiis will take time, I don’t think the new coach will sign before June because he wants to choose the best and have his hands free and understand who among the great coaches is left without a job,” Venerato revealed.

“For many, in fact, Napoli is not the first choice. It’s not true of [Luciano] Spalletti, who has already agreed. It applies to Allegri and [Simone] Inzaghi.

“Allegri knows that there is interest from Real Madrid, Juventus and Inter if Conte leaves. Inzaghi, on the other hand, first wants to understand what [Lazio President Claudio] Lotito wants to do. Lazio is his favourite team,” he added.

Allegri has been out of work since departing Juventus in 2019, but has enjoyed a hugely successful career in Serie A, leading the Bianconeri to five league titles after winning the Scudetto with Milan in 2011.

The 53-year-old has been linked with a return to Juventus to replace under pressure Andrea Pirlo, with the Bianconeri facing a battle to qualify for the Champions League.
