Referee Gianpaolo Calvarese has been criticised for his handling of the Derby d’Italia between Inter and Juventus yesterday by Italian journalist Marco Bucciantini.

The Bianconeri’s 3-2 victory at the Allianz Stadium was overshadowed by numerous controversial incidents, with Juventus awarded two penalties and seeing Rodrigo Bentancur sent off, whilst Inter were also given a penalty and had a goal disallowed, before Marcelo Brozovic was dismissed late on.

Appearing on Italian television channel Sky Sport Italia earlier today, Bucciantini argued that the match was soured by inconsistency and the atmosphere meant that there was little focus or attention on the actual football.

“It was a disoriented game. There was inconsistency, the final decision (a late Juventus penalty) was bitter,” he claimed.

“Today those incidents can be evaluated in a different way. Errors here and there. A little more respect would be needed, but there was little sense of football.”

Inter took the lead in the match as Romelu Lukaku scored a penalty as Matthijs De Ligt caught Lautaro Martinez, before Juventus equalised from a spot kick of their own.

Matteo Darmian was adjudged to have fouled Giorgio Chiellini, allowing Cristiano Ronaldo to score the rebound after initially missing his penalty.

Juan Cuadrado put Juventus ahead before half time and Bentancur was dismissed early in the second half, and whilst a Chiellini own goal drew Inter level late on, Cuadrado earned and scored a controversial penalty immediately after to hand the Bianconeri the points.
