Inter are set to miss out on a potential €17 million if Monza fail to secure promotion to Serie A, according to a report in the Italian media tonight.

Cristian Brocchi’s side seem almost certain to lose their Serie B play-off semi-final against Cittadella, having lost their first leg 3-0 away from home last night.

As per FcInter1908.it, Monza have two Inter players on loan who they would like to sign on permanent deals, namely Michele Di Gregorio and Lorenzo Pirola.

However, they are far less likely to make those investments if they miss out on promotion, which would cause Inter another headache as they look to balance their books.

Di Gregorio joined Monza last summer on loan, but Silvio Berlusconi’s club have an option to make that move permanent for €7 million in the summer.

Inter have a counter-option if they wish to re-sign their goalkeeper, but given the club’s financial problems that would almost certainly not happen.

Pirola signed for Monza on a season-long loan with no option to buy, but Inter were due to sit down with the Biancorossi at the end of the season to discuss the defender’s future.

Monza were ready to make an offer worth €10 million to sign the 19-year-old, leaving Inter a buy-back option on Pirola for future seasons.

Inter would have been able to secure vital resources in the transfer market by offloading Pirola and Di Gregorio, while also registering a healthy pair of capital gains.

However, it now seems that will not be possible and they will need to find alternative ways to raise funds, unless Monza complete a miraculous turnaround on Thursday.
