Inter centre-back Andrea Ranocchia will be given the opportunity to extend his stay at the club beyond this summer but must agree to a pay cut.

The former Italy international is out of contract this summer and appears set for release after just seven league appearances this season, as Inter look to cut costs and offload players.

However, Ranocchia may be rewarded for his 10 years of service to the club by being offered a new contract, although it would require him agreeing to reduced terms, according to L’Interista.it.

Ranocchia is considered to be an important figure in the dressing room by Antonio Conte, despite his limited impact on the pitch, and the coach is keen to retain him in the squad ahead of Inter’s defence of their Serie A title next season.

He is also viewed as a useful back-up option in defence and can fill in during a heavy schedule across the season, leading to Inter reconsidering and allowing him to remain.

The 33-year-old joined Inter from Genoa in December 2010 and has scored 13 goals in 215 appearances, during which he had spells on loan at Sampdoria and Hull City.
