Inter’s chief doctor Piero Volpi has praised coach Antonio Conte and his staff for making the players fitter and stronger this season, as they secured the Serie A title.

The Nerazzurri were crowned champions for the first time since 2010 and won the league in a campaign set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, with little turnaround from the end of last season.

In an interview with Inter’s official Twitch account yesterday, and as reported by FCInter1908.it, Volpi felt that Conte and the training staff had managed the squad effectively to avoid injuries, with the Nerazzurri enjoying consistency in player availability.

“It was certainly complicated. In terms of limiting injuries, which is the most important goal of the medical staff, great credit goes to the coaching staff and Mr. Conte. In two years they have raised the level of quality and quantity of physical work and have prevented injuries,” Volpi declared.

“It’s also thanks to the preventive schemes that we have been putting in place for years and on which we are strict. Finally, thanks also to the people I work with, our medical staff is made up of good doctors and therapists. Ideas are not enough.

“Everyone, even in the youth and women sectors, have worked in the field of professional correctness and it is thanks to them.”

The doctor admitted that this had been a particularly challenging season and the threat of coronavirus outbreaks had led to uncertainty that the league would be completed.

“It was a season that started with all the COVID-19 problems, we spent months in a difficult situation. It was not obvious that the league would finish, and completing the whole season should be applauded.”

Inter played their final game of a Scudetto-winning season in front of 1,000 spectators at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza against Udinese yesterday, and Volpi felt it was a positive sign for wider Italian sport.

“It’s not only hope. Opening up to the public is the resumption of normality. We have been in a pandemic era.

“Seeing movement with vaccines and not just resorting to swabs is an opening for professional sport and beyond, also for all people who want to play sports, We hope for a resumption of all Italian sport,” he added.
