Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has joked that the relative comfort in which they won the Scudetto this season was not in keeping with the club’s historic successes.
The Nerazzurri were crowned champions with four matches to spare after opening up a huge lead at the top of the table, and were finally able to lift the trophy following their 5-1 victory over Udinese in the last game of the campaign yesterday.
In an interview with Inter TV following the match at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Ausilio reflected on the title in comparison to the final-day victory over Parma to clinch the Scudetto in 2008, and a last gasp win over Lazio to secure Champions League qualification 10 years later.
“This triumph is not exactly like Inter. I said to [Vice-President Javier] Zanetti that we have had a month without anxiety, smiling while watching the other matches and enjoying it,” Ausilio said.
“I remember titles won in the final games like in Parma or qualifying forthe Champions League like against Lazio or Empoli. Those are Inter wins. This year we had a little more fun, finishing first in a league with such competitive teams and with four matches to spare was crazy.”
After spending 24 years at Inter and working under former President Massimo Moratti, Ausilio was delighted to see the club enjoying success again under Steven Zhang, having endured 11 years without a league title.
“I saw many things again today coming to the stadium, many moments of joy. I was lucky enough to be part of a winning project with the Moratti family, while in recent years we have had more suffering.
“It was something different but special and I feel like a protagonist. They were difficult years, it was a long project and in the end we were able to enjoy after years of sacrifice,” he concluded.
