Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti congratulated the team on making their mark in the club’s history by securing the Scudetto this season.

The Nerazzurri, under coach Antonio Conte, were crowned Serie A champions for the first time since 2010 and lifted the trophy following yesterday’s 5-1 win over Udinese at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, to wrap up a hugely successful campaign.

In an interview with Inter TV after the celebrations, Zanetti lauded the squad and felt that they were worthy champions, whilst expressing regret that fans were not there to witness such a memorable season.

“This title is special. The coach, the staff, all these guys have written a very important page of history in our club. And they did it deservedly, with an extraordinary job despite the many difficulties,” the former captain declared.

“We hope to see the fans again here at San Siro soon, I hope from the first match of next season. They deserve to celebrate with all of us.”

Zanetti was also impressed with the culture at the club and pointed to the arrival of Conte as a significant factor in the changed mentality that had led to the league title.

“The merit of this team is to have overcome all difficulties by believing in work. They never gave up, they had an ambition.

“Conte and his staff have brought a culture of work that has allowed these guys to win a title that will go down in history . The numbers speak for themselves with an extraordinary second half of the season, it is well deserved.

“I am very happy, I shared all the moments with them. I was very close to the team and I saw how much they worked,” he concluded.

Zanetti joined Inter from Banfield in 1995 and went on to make 858 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning five Serie A titles, before retiring and taking up a boardroom position in 2014.
