Inter have told Antonio Conte they want to keep him as head coach, according to a report in the Italian media tonight.
FcInterNews.it said the Nerazzurri got in touch with Conte from their offices in Milan today, where they are working to meet their various payment deadlines and organise their financing deal with Oaktree Capital.
Inter’s directors have agreed to extend their contracts (all of which expire in 2022) while reducing their salaries by 20%, and the club are considering a similar option for Conte.
The club have made their decision that they intend to keep Conte, and now it is up to Conte to make up his own mind about next season.
Inter’s decision today is not an official announcement that can end the uncertainty, the report admitted, but it is a clear stance that puts the ball right in Conte’s court.
The Nerazzurri are eager to continue the journey they began with Conte back in the summer of 2019, despite all the financial problems which have emerged in the last few months.
Conte is aware of the difficulties Inter are facing and now he must decide whether to stay and target a 20th Serie A title (which would deliver a second star), or if he wishes to leave.
Inter cannot guarantee to Conte that they will keep all their star players in the summer, as the same source explained earlier tonight.
