Antonio Conte could officially leave Inter as early as today, according to a report in the Italian media.
Gazzetta dello Sport said negotiations were ongoing over a mutual termination agreement, and if things go swiftly they could be sorted in a matter of hours.
Conte is due to receive €13.5 million after tax in the final year of his salary, but he would only get around half that amount in the agreement being discussed with Inter.
Inter are in a hurry to sort his future because they need as much time as possible to plan for next season, with Max Allegri top of their list to replace Conte (although he also has interest from Juventus).
The Nerazzurri are ‘almost certainly’ going to announce Conte’s successor before this weekend and Beppe Marotta is known to have contacted Allegri last summer, when Conte seemed certain to leave back then.
Finding a replacement for Conte is not their only problem though, because Inter fans are protesting angrily in Milan today after hearing news of Conte’s probable exit.
Marotta, Alessandro Antonello and Piero Ausilio met with delegates from Inter’s Curva Nord earlier, after they hung banners outside the club’s offices which attacked Steven Zhang.
The directors confirmed and explained the reasons behind Antonio Conte’s departure adding that Inter’s problems are exclusively financial and reassured everyone that the club’s project remains ambitious.
They also made it clear that Inter are hoping to only sacrifice one big player in the summer transfer window, despite reports in Italy suggesting multiple players could leave.
