Diego Godin has no regrets about his decision to leave Inter, despite a stressful season battling relegation at Cagliari.

Inter signed Godin from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and benefited from his class and experience to reach the UEFA Europa League final, while also finishing second in the league behind Juventus.

However, the Uruguay defender lasted just one season in Milan before he was surprisingly released to join Cagliari last summer.

“Antonio Conte told me he had a different idea,” Godin explained in an interview with Uruguayan broadcaster Canal 10, where he was a guest on ‘Punto Penal’.

“He had a project with younger players.

“I knew I’d need to play all the games to stay in shape for the national team, where I’m the captain, so the best thing was to change teams.

“I took the decision to leave Milan, therefore.”

Godin has made 28 appearances in all competitions for Cagliari, who finally secured their Serie A status with two games to spare.

“They obviously have bigger ambitions than that, the president (Tommaso Giulini) wanted to finish in the top half,” Godin admitted.

“I’ve learned a lot of things in Italy and my experience with Inter was important for my career.”

Cagliari finished 16th in Serie A with 37 points, losing both of their matches against Inter this season (3-1 at home and 1-0 at San Siro).

His former Inter teammate and fellow countryman Matias Vecino described him as a model professional earlier this week.
