Inter offered Max Allegri a monster salary in their failed bid to secure his services, a leading Italian transfer expert has revealed.
Allegri has agreed a deal to rejoin Juventus just two years after he left the club, and that means Inter will need to look elsewhere for their successor to Antonio Conte.
However, the Nerazzurri went all-out to try and convince Allegri until a few hours ago, only to be beaten to his signature by their arch rivals.
“Inter tried until this morning to convince Allegri not to go to Juventus,” Gianluca Di Marzio explained on Sky Sport 24.
“The club offered him a very similar salary to the one Conte was earning.
“If Inter find the right coach they won’t be looking to save money, now they need to find the right coach for their future.”
Inter must now find another option to replace Conte, but there is no obvious candidate for the Nerazzurri job as things stand.
Di Marzio suggested the club would need a bit of time to assess their options now their no. 1 preference had been taken off the market.
“I think we need to wait for the moment,” Di Marzio added.
“Let’s see if the directors choose to pursue the ideas they already had in mind like Sinisa Mihajlovic or Paulo Fonseca, or maybe chase someone whose name hasn’t emerged yet.
“Maurizio Sarri comes to mind, but he has a different style of play to the one Conte’s Inter had and they’d need to have a different philosophy in the transfer market.
“Mauricio Pochettino’s name emerged earlier but he could go back to Tottenham Hotspur.
“Inter need to make their considerations now and find who the right coach is; not every club have Plan B, Plan C and Plan D ready to go.
“They wanted to continue with Conte by persuading him to keep going with this project, until last night they were trying to convince him to stay.”
Conte left Inter by mutual consent last night after two seasons in charge, following Suning’s decision to cut costs ahead of the new campaign.
Di Marzio said he could have interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain now.
