Lazio have all but confirmed Simone Inzaghi will become Inter’s new head coach.

Inzaghi agreed a new contract with the Biancocelesti last night, having spent hours talking to club president Claudio Lotito.

However, Inter came in with an improved bid today and convinced Inzaghi to change his mind, and now he is on the verge of joining the Nerazzurri.

In a remarkably cold statement, which didn’t even mention Inzaghi by name, Lazio begrudgingly wrote: “We respect the change of heart of a coach and, before that, a player, who for a long time attached his name to the Lazio family and to lots of Biancocelesti successes.”

Inter have spent today frantically seeking a replacement for Antonio Conte, who parted company by mutual consent last night.

Inzaghi appears to be all but certain of succeeding Conte, after five successful seasons at Lazio in which he won the Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa Italiana titles.

Lazio also finished fourth in Serie A twice under Inzaghi, who previously spent a long career with the capital club as a player and won the Serie A title there in 2000.
