Antonio Conte might have left Inter but he did so very reluctantly, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition said Conte expected and hoped to continue as the Nerazzurri’s head coach, but he decided to leave because the prospects for next season weren’t reassuring.

Conte realised it wouldn’t have changed anything if he spoke with Steven Zhang and didn’t want an ‘exhausting’ season, where he would be under pressure to achieve results with a weakened squad.

He was aware it would be a draining challenge and therefore decided to take a step back, bidding farewell to Zhang in a phone call earlier this week.

Conte wanted a mutual termination agreement sorted quickly and now he can think about making his next move, the Milan-based paper explained.

He is receiving signs of interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, but Tottenham Hotspur mustn’t be forgotten either as they seek a permanent replacement for Jose Mourinho.
