Inter will save €8 million in salaries by replacing Antonio Conte with Simone Inzaghi, according to a report in the Italian media today.
Tuttosport’s print edition said that would be the difference between Conte and Inzaghi’s wages, even considering the payoff Inter gave Conte when they parted company.
Inter CEO Beppe Marotta wanted Max Allegri to come in but he is heading back to Juventus, so Inzaghi will take over the reigns at San Siro instead.
Inzaghi will play a 3-5-2 system which is very similar to what Conte used, the Turin-based paper argued, having used that formation throughout most of his five-year tenure at Lazio.
Lazio president Claudio Lotito was convinced he had agreed a new contract with Inzaghi on Wednesday night, but then Inzaghi changed his mind and accepted Inter’s offer instead.
Inter will announce the former striker as their new boss either today or next week, but there is no doubt now that he is Conte’s successor.
Inzaghi will be reunited with Stefan de Vrij at Inter, the report noted, while he will also coach Roberto Gagliardini and Danilo D’Ambrosio (if he signs a new contract) after being linked with both at Lazio.
