Inter could receive a welcome hand in their squad-trimming mission from former boss Luciano Spalletti, according to a report in Italy today.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition claimed Spalletti’s imminent appointment at Napoli could lead to interest from the Partenopei for Matias Vecino.

Inter signed Vecino from Fiorentina in 2017 after Spalletti requested the Uruguay international, but he is no longer part of the Nerazzurri’s plans.

Vecino recently celebrated his 100th appearance for the club, but his time with Inter is almost certainly over as Suning look to offload squad players and high earners.

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has a difficult task on his hand this summer, the Milan-based paper explained, because he needs to find buyers for all their unwanted players.

Arturo Vidal would want to stay but Inter hope he can find a new club, while Alexis Sanchez will be evaluated by new head coach Simone Inzaghi.

Stefano Sensi has interest from Shakhtar Donetsk, who are now coached by his former Sassuolo boss Roberto De Zerbi, and Fiorentina, who recently appointed Gennaro Gattuso.

Inter are hoping to reduce their wage bill by 15-20% before the start of next season, following an express request from club president Steven Zhang.

If Inter can’t shift their fringe players then they will need to sell members of their starting XI, the report warned, and the three most likely candidates are Achraf Hakimi, Lautaro Martinez and Marcelo Brozovic.
