Simone Inzaghi has been on Inter’s radar for far longer than the last two days, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Tuttosport’s print edition revealed Piero Ausilio made contact with Inzaghi back in December, to sound him out over potentially coming into the club this summer.

Ausilio had perhaps already realised back then that Antonio Conte might not stay, so he got in touch to find out what Inzaghi’s situation at Lazio was.

Inzaghi’s contract expires with Lazio next month and he has opted against signing a renewal, freeing him up to replace Conte at Inter.

Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has also had contact with Inzaghi in the past, the Turin-based paper recalled, because he thought about hiring him as a replacement for Massimiliano Allegri once.

Inzaghi will become Inter’s seventh head coach under Suning and will bring his assistant Massimiliano Farris with him to the Nerazzurri, an ex-defender who grew up as an AC Milan fan.

Mario Cecchi and Fabio Ripert, two other members of Inzaghi’s backroom staff at Lazio, will also come to Inter for next season.

Inter will at least retain their current goalkeeping coach Adriano Bonaiuti, who has been following Samir Handanovic’s career for many years.
