Simone Inzaghi could hardly have hoped for anything better than the chance to join Inter, according to former Lazio boss Delio Rossi.

The Nerazzurri have picked Inzaghi as their replacement for Antonio Conte, who left the club by mutual consent last week.

Inzaghi is due to be appointed on a two-year deal, although Inter haven’t announced his arrival yet because he has issues to sort with Lazio president Claudio Lotito.

“I understand why Inzaghi has gone to Inter,” Rossi, who coached the Biancocelesti between 2005 and 2009, told Radio Radio (via FcInterNews.it).

“He’s received a call from the champions of Italy and they’ve offered to double his wages…

“Simone would have had to leave sometime anyway, he needed to go and test himself.

“What better experience could there be (to do that) than Inter?”

Inzaghi spent five seasons coaching Lazio and secured three trophies during that time, winning one Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa Italiana titles.

He also guided the Biancocelesti to two fourth-place finishes in Serie A, one of which secured them qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Inzaghi left Lazio under a cloud last week, after he agreed to sign a new deal and then changed his mind to accept Inter’s offer.

“The manner in which Inzaghi left perhaps wasn’t nice,” Rossi admitted.

“If you find an agreement that you didn’t have the day before, which seems to have been the case, and then the day after you leave because Inter come in…

“Personally, if I’d shaken hands and reached an agreement (with Lazio), even Real Madrid could have come in the day after and I’d have kept my promise.”
