Romelu Lukaku has revealed he chose to join Inter with a little help from American rapper Jay-Z.

Inter signed the Belgian from Manchester United in the summer of 2019, and two years later they are delighted with their decision because they have become Serie A champions.

Lukaku is the undisputed king of Milan after scoring 64 goals in 95 appearances across all competitions, but he needed a little convincing to accept Inter’s offer two years ago.

“When I met Jay-Z, I saw his attitude to life: he knew who I truly was and he taught me how to be at the top and become a winner,” Lukaku revealed in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport for today’s print edition.

“I remember when he told me: ‘If you really think Inter is the step you need to make to win, do it.’

“My teammates and I came within an inch of winning a trophy during our first season, but we did in the next season with hard work, patience, sweat and sacrifice.

“That’s the path Jay had shown me.”

Inter won the Serie A title after Atalanta were held to a draw at Sassuolo on matchday 35, at which point celebrations erupted around Milan.

Lukaku revealed Jay-Z got in touch with him on that manic afternoon, recalling: “Guess who called me at the end of Sassuolo-Atalanta?

“It was him, he called to congratulate me because he knew how important it was for me to win my first Scudetto in Italy.

“I feel lucky that I can speak to him when I want; I know he’s got my back and wants the best for me.”

Lukaku is a big music fan and went on to explain the importance music has in his life, before being asked what song he would pick to describe this Scudetto.

“Music is a way of keeping me connected to the difficult moments I’ve had in my life,” he explained.

“It’s very important, it’s not just a hobby but a part of myself.

“It’s difficult to pick one song for this Scudetto because it was an exceptional journey and full of lots of stories.

“But H.a.m by Kanye West and Jay-Z comes to mind; it’s from 10 years sago, but it’s still relevant.

“It tells us that we need to believe in ourselves to achieve great results in life.”

Lukaku also confirmed he listens to music before each game, adding: “It’s a ritual.

“I have a special playlist which accompanies me when I get to the stadium and before the match.

“It helps me concentrate, it helps me stay focused on the objective we need to reach.”
