Simone Inzaghi is considered by the Inter hierarchy to be the most successful Italian coach remaining after Max Allegri’s appointment at Allegri, and this was a major factor in the decision to appoint him as Antonio Conte’s successor.
In yesterday’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Correire dello Sport it is reported that Inzaghi’s record winning trophies and achieving success at Lazio has impressed Inter’s directors, and is what convinced them that he is the correct candidate for the head coach position.
During the seasons prior to 2020-21 Italian football was dominated by Juventus, with the Turin-based club winning the majority of available trophies under Antonio Conte and Max Allegri, but Lazio’s accomplishments relative to their budget and expectations are nevertheless highly thought of.
Under Inzaghi, the Biancocelesti have defeated the Bianconeri to win the Italian Super Cup twice (in 2017 and 2019), defeated Atalanta in the 2019 Coppa Italia final, and most significantly, qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in twenty years after a successful 2019-20 campaign which was the culmination of the team’s improvement under Inzaghi.
