Matteo Darmian will have an important role to play in Simone Inzaghi’s Inter, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Inter are due for a summer shakeup in their wing-back positions, with Achraf Hakimi heading to Paris Saint-Germain and Ivan Perisic facing an uncertain future.

Gazzetta.it said Darmian was the only player currently certain to be an option for Inzaghi in that role, but the former Lazio boss appreciates his versatility.

Inzaghi could opt to play Darmian as a third centre-back in some games, the Milan-based publication claimed, just as he did occasionally under Antonio Conte.

Inter’s new boss normally picks one attacking-minded wing-back with one defensive-minded player, the report added, and Darmian would appear to fit the latter category.

Inzaghi was confirmed yesterday as Inter’s replacement for Antonio Conte and had dinner with president Steven Zhang and the club’s directors, after visiting Appiano Gentile for the first time.
