Simone Inzaghi was reassured by Inter president Steven Zhang about the club’s ambitions yesterday, according to a report in the Italian media.

La Repubblica’s print edition said Inzaghi met Zhang for dinner last night after his first official day as the Nerazzurri’s head coach.

Zhang made it clear to Inzaghi that Inter would remain competitive and the first proof of this is the news that Romelu Lukaku is staying.

The club will need to sanction one or two sales, though, with Achraf Hakimi still expected to leave before the end of the month.

Inzaghi will need to refresh Inter’s options in the wing-back spots and the club’s first target is Emerson Palmieri, who is out of favour at Chelsea.

Antonio Conte wanted to sign the Italian-Brazilian but it seems Inter are still keen on a deal for the 26-year-old, whose contract in West London expires next summer.

Rodrigo de Paul is an ‘impossible’ target for Inter, the report claimed, because Atletico Madrid are preparing a €40 million offer for Udinese.
