Inter made an offer to Carlo Ancelotti before hiring Simone Inzaghi as their new head coach, a report in the Spanish media has claimed.

Diario AS (via FcInter1908.it) said Ancelotti rejected the chance to join the Nerazzurri before agreeing his surprise return to Real Madrid.

Carletto could have turned down Inter’s proposal by saying he still had three years on his contract at Everton, but he declined for sentimental reasons.

Ancelotti told Inter’s intermediaries that he could not join the Serie A champions because he could not ‘betray’ AC Milan fans, after he made his career there.

AC Milan enjoyed Ancelotti’s talents as a midfielder before hiring him as their head coach in the early 2000s, winning one Serie A title and two UEFA Champions League titles.

He will instead return to Madrid, where he secured ‘La Decima’ (a tenth European Cup) for Real Madrid by winning Europe’s biggest club prize in 2014.
