Nicolo Barella’s former coach at Cagliari Rolando Maran has praised the Inter midfielder ahead of the player’s appearances for Italy at the Euros.

Appearing on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia the former manager talked about the 24-year-old’s special talent and his positive effect for both the Inter and the national team.

Maran believes that Barella will be a key player and exhibit a leadership role for the Azzurri this summer.

The Italian coach recalls being highly impressed by the now-Inter player’s qualities when still managing him at Cagliari, and had predicted that the youngster would go on to have a special career.

After leaving Cagliari for Inter in the summer of 2019, Barella went on to establish himself as a key player in head coach Antonio Conte’s squad, culminating in his impressive form during the scudetto run last season.

Inter fans will hope that the Italian will continue to perform at such a high level under new boss Simone Inzaghi next season, and Azzurri supporters will hope that his form transfers to the national team.

Maran stated: “[Barella] had an extraordinary campaign with me at Cagliari, and another when he went to Inter. I feel a sentimental attachment to him but he’s a player who shifts games.”
