An Atalanta scout who previously worked with Inter centre-back Alessandro Bastoni has suggested that he could still feature for Italy this summer, according to an Italian broadcast last night.

Speaking in the studio with Sky Sport, Franco Maffezzoli explained that despite seemingly being the fourth choice centre back for Italy at this summer’s European Championship, Alessandro Bastoni could still end up featuring.

“He is the fourth central player now, also behind Acerbi but he can find space. There are warnings, suspensions, a slight injury like Chiellini’s, but he can play.”

Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci has been the partnership that Roberto Mancini has trusted for Gli Azzurri’s first two games of Euro 2020. They have beaten both Turkey and Switzerland 3-0, meaning the team is not likely to be changed based on form.

Giorgio Chiellini limped off injured against Switzerland though and Francesco Acerbi replaced him rather than Alessandro Bastoni, which suggests he may not see many minutes.

If Giorgio Chiellini’s injury is a bad one, there is still a chance that Roberto Mancini will choose the Inter defender’s pace over the experience of Francesco Acerbi.
