Hakan Calhanoglu isn’t at the same level that Christian Eriksen is but given the situation he was the best player Inter could sign.

This according to noted Italian journalist Fabrizio Biasin when speaking to Italian news outlet Calciomercato.it, who also claimed that the Nerazzurri will extend the contract of midfielder Marcelo Brozovic.

Biasin notes that the deal to take Calhanoglu to the Giuseppe Meazza has been a very rapid one, but believes that it is already very close to completion and should be confirmed tomorrow.

The Turkish midfielder’s contract with Milan is set to expire at the end of the month, and he is thought to have been a target of numerous European clubs on a free transfer.

However, the Nerazzurri have shown an interest in the 27-year-old in recent days due to the need to replace the contributions of stricken midfielder Christian Eriksen for next season.

“I still hope that Christian Eriksen returns to play, even if it isn’t in Italy. Inter are legitimately trying to address an issue.

“Calhanoglu isn’t at the high level of Eriksen but in this moment given these difficulties, a player that the coach likes and that knows the Serie A, he’s the best player available.”

Meanwhile, Biasin also reports that Inter want to extend the contract of Croatian international midfielder Marcelo Brozovic whose contract is expiring in 2022.

“I think that Inter wants to keep him, he’s been integral for all Inter coaches these last 5 years, and with Eriksen he became even more important, when touching the ball even less.

“I think he will renew his contract. Also, because putting him on the transfer market with just a year left on his deal means you’ll get paid very little.”
