Inter are eligible to have a large portion of stricken midfielder Christian Eriksen’s salary covered by FIFA after his cardiac arrest in Denmark’s EURO 2020 opener.
The rules for eligibility are explained by Italian football finance outlet Calcio e Finanza, who report that the Nerazzurri will collect a large portion of the player’s salary for next year through the FIFA Club Protection Program 2019-2022.
The 29-year-old Dane is not expected to return next season as he recovers from his health emergency, and may not be able to return to the pitch at all in Italy depending on whether his ICD device is temporary or permanent.
There is no coverage for the value of the player’s contract, but FIFA does provide up to €7.5 million per 365-day period on the wages of players injured during international competition, of which the UEFA Euros are included.
This would cover a large part of Eriksen’s salary, thought to be net €9 million annually.
The payment will allow Inter and the player to consider their options going forward without having to worry about the finances of the player’s wages while he is ruled out.
