An ex-AS Roma midfielder has claimed that with three extra signings, Antonio Conte would have won next season’s UEFA Champions League with Inter, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.
Speaking to Sport Mediaset ahead of Italy’s EURO 2020 round of 16 tie against Austria on Saturday evening, Herbert Prohaska suggested that Antonio Conte was not far away from achieving something very special with Inter before his abrupt departure.
Antonio Conte left the club when it became clear that the club needed to raise around €70 million from player sales and reduce the wage bill by 15%. He disagreed with the owners over this tactic and decided to leave. It was a departure that troubled Herbert Prohaska, who played 26 times for AS Roma in the early 1980s.
“I’m also a bit sad about Conte’s farewell and the disposals they have to make. I thought that if he had bought three players he could have won the Champions League.”
Herbert Prohaska won the Scudetto with AS Roma whilst he was there and he suggested that new Giallorossi coach Jose Mourinho has a very suitable style of football for Serie A.
“Inter was a team used to winning, but in Rome it was historic: they had been waiting for the Scudetto for 41 years. Jose Mourinho? He is a suitable coach for Serie A, given the football that his teams play.”
