An ex-Inter defender has criticised the performance of Italy and Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella after the Azzurri needed extra time to beat Austria in the Euro 2020 round of 16, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media yesterday night.
Whilst analysing the national team’s game against Austria on Bobo TV, Daniele Adani made it clear that he was disappointed with the majority of Italy’s players. He singled out the three attackers but also picked out Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella.
“In 80 minutes, our three forwards produced just a crossbar from Immobile with a long shot out of the context of the game. And even Nicolo Barella did not do well today.”
In the first half, it seemed like Italy were going to breeze past Austria like they did to all three teams they played in the group stages. Nicolo Barella was playing a more offensive role because Marco Verratti was back in the side instead of Manuel Locatelli.
In the second half though, Italy lost all their intensity and couldn’t break Austria down until extra-time where Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina both scored.
