Belgian cycling legend Eddy Merckx has offered his assessment of Inter striker Romelu Lukaku, who he believes is one of Belgium’s most important players ahead of Friday’s EURO 2020 quarterfinal clash with Italy.

Speaking in an interview reported by Italian news outlet FCInterNews, the decorated cyclist included the Scudetto-winning Nerazzurri center forward among his list of the Red Devils’ most impactful players.

Belgium will hope that this tournament can be the nation’s most successful, and there is optimism that the squad will have the quality to surpass their recent tournament finishes of quarterfinalists at EURO 2016 and semifinalists at the most recent World Cup.

One of their stars is undoubtedly Inter man Lukaku, with the 28-year-old having already scored three goals for the team this summer.

Belgian supporters will hope that the player can replicate his impressive form from the club season, which saw him finish top of the league for combined goals and assists as the Nerazzurri won the Scudetto, for his country in the remaining knockout rounds.

Merckx echoed this, stating:

“Lukaku is a great player. He’s like a bull, it’s hard to stop him when he gets going.”
