Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella has been discussing the incredible form that he and Italy have been showing at Euro 2020 following the quarter-final victory over Belgium, according to a report in the Italian media.

The quotes reported by FCInterNews from Nicolo Barella’s recent press conference show that as happy as the Inter midfielder was with Italy’s victory, he still felt sorry for his club teammate Romelu Lukaku who was on the losing side. Many tipped the Belgian striker to win the golden boot at the tournament.

“I was sorry for him. We have created something special, but he will have many other occasions to celebrate.”

Italy’s next opponent will be Spain in the semi-final on Tuesday evening. Despite seemingly being a weaker opponent this time around, the Spain team between 2008 and 2012 won two European Championships and a World Cup.

It featured what is widely regarded as one of the best midfield setups ever and Nicolo Barella clearly has a lot of admiration for that side and seeks to reach that level.

“They had great champions who inspired everyone, like Xavi and Iniesta. It’s easy to say that we were inspired but all those who love football. I have different characteristics, seeing me in them was difficult.”
