Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti believes that Inter could struggle to defend the Scudetto next year, declaring that he does not view them among the favourites to win Serie A.

Speaking to Italian news outlet Calciomercato.com, the journalist named the teams who he believes are likeliest to compete for the Scudetto next season, and explained why the Nerazzurri are not among his list.

Last season’s Scudetto triumph under Antonio Conte was historical for the Nerazzurri, with the club having failed to lift the title since 2010, and last season’s imperious form ending a nine-year run of title dominance for Juventus.

The pressure will be on Inter to show their quality next season as they look to defend their crown, and many observers have looked at the club as de facto favourites, having shown that they are capable of it last season.

However, the departure of Antonio Conte as head coach, as well as the loss of wing-back Achraf Hakimi and the mandate to limit spending in the transfer market, has led some to question whether the Nerazzurri will be able to maintain their strength next season.

Sconcerti does not believe so, and considers the main contenders for the Scudetto to be Juventus, Napoli, and Roma.

He explains why he does not regard Inter as being in this group the following way:

“I can’t include Inter because they lost Conte, the team’s real mark was his, and Hakimi’s departure also adds to this loss.”

He continued, “There is still a long way to go before the end of the transfer window, but I don’t think that many players who arrive will be able to shift the balance.

“It will be a league of great coaches rather than great players,” suggesting that Inter boss Simone Inzaghi is yet to prove his credentials as a title-winner.
