Inter are targeting Sassuolo’s Gianluca Scamacca as a backup to Romelu Lukaku in the centre-forward position for next season.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInter1908, who report that Monaco striker Keita Balde continues to make himself available, but that the Sassuolo striker’s profile is preferred to that of the Senegalese.

The Nerazzurri are determined not to head into next season without an able deputy for Lukaku, with the Belgian a crucial player in the squad with no real like-for-like replacement in case he is injured, suspended, or needs a rest.

22-year-old striker Andrea Pinamonti is not thought to have qualities that are liked by head coach Simone Inzaghi, having also struggled for game time under Inzaghi’s predecessor Antonio Conte.

The Nerazzurri will hope that Pinamonti can depart from the club this summer, and should he do so, they will look to bring in an attacker who has the right profile to deputize for Lukaku.

22-year-old Sassuolo striker Scamacca has been identified as the player who the club would most like to sign, as he has stylistic similarities to Lukaku and it is thought that an agreement could be reached with the Neroverdi, with whom the Nerazzurri have good relations.

Balde still wants an Inter move, where he would reunite with Inzaghi having worked together with the Italian for several seasons together at Lazio, but he is not considered by the club to be suitable for their needs at the moment.
