Legendary former Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli has expressed his fears about the future of the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, the 65-year-old opened up about his worries about the Nerazzurri, gaving his opinion on the direction in which the club appears to be headed.

In particular, the former striker expressed dismay that Romelu Lukaku looks set for an exit from the club, praising the contributions of the Belgian over the past two season. proposing that him leaving would be a significant loss going forward.

“I still hope this deal [to sell Lukaku to Chelsea] will fail. Lukaku is Inter through and through, the one who made us take the leap in quality.

“The extra man who has shown so many times that he is attached to the shirt, that he has embraced the project.”

For Altobelli, the loss of Lukaku would signify more than just the end of his formidable contributions on the pitch, with the club also set to lose the 28-year-old’s character, and to part with the striker as a symbol of its achievements and ambitions.

He explained that Lukaku “is the symbol of the team. If we lose him, it follows that the ambitions change. In this business, many benefit, but not the fans. Everything else now has its price.”

Altobelli continued by speaking about the broader significance of Lukaku’s departure, expressing pessimism at the direction of the club.

‘It’s a major blow,” he said of Lukaku’s sale, “The heart cries at seeing the best players leave, but I hope that these sacrifices at least allow us to avoid worse problems such as bankruptcy.

“I am worried. The project is not sustainable also because Suning does not make up for losses as other owners do.”
