Former Roma midfielder Fabio Semplici is surprised that Inter sold Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea, expecting the Belgian to remain at the club as an important player for next season.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, as reported by FCInter1908, the former midfielder expressed surprise that the Belgian was allowed to leave, but believes that the signing of Edin Dzeko from Roma represents a good start to replacing him.

Lukaku’s departure was a major shock to the entire football world, but especially to the Nerazzurri, who have lost one of their most important players from last season’s Scudetto triumph.

The Belgian’s sale to the Premier League was a highly controversial decisions by fans, and even directors within the club were reported to have been opposed to it, and Semplici is among the many observers who found the sale to be puzzling given the extent to which it weakens Inter heading into the new season.

“I didn’t expect it,” he said of the sale, “I thought he would stay. He chose to go to Chelsea, a great team. The Blues will fight again to win the Champions League.”

On Dzeko, he stated that “I think Inter have made a great signing.”
