Legendary former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta believes that Inter will be fighting amongst a pack of five teams for the Scudetto and for the Champions League places.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published in today’s print edition, the Milan legend explained his view that the Nerazzurri could be guided to success by newly-appointed head coach Simone Inzaghi but that the margin for the season is likely to be much narrower than it was last season.

The Nerazzurri won the Scudetto by a significant margin last season, finishing twelve points clear of Costacurta’s former club and their city rivals Milan who occupied second place.

However, club have endured a summer of upheaval, losing key players and head coach Antonio Conte, and Costacurta believes that the Rossoneri and other major rivals will catch up to them.

“I see five teams competing for the top four places,” he stated, naming “The Milan clubs, Juve, Naapoli, and Atalanta.”

Costacurta thinks that the Nerazzurri’s losses this summer will narrow the gap, but he also believes in head coach Inzaghi.

“The gap with the others has decreased,” he said of the margin for Inter, “considering the loss of Hakimi, the third symbolic element of the Nerazzurri after Conte and Lukaku. For Simone Inzaghi, whom I adore as a person, it will be a great challenge – he can become a great coach, I’m cheering for him too.”
