Former striker Alessandro Matri believes that Inter should be considered a top team in Serie A in spite of having sold key players this summer, with new head coach Simone Inzaghi a major factor.

In an interview with Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, published in yesterday’s print edition, the 37-year-old gave his view that the Nerazzurri could still be considered Scudetto favourites despite having lost the likes of Achraf Hakimi and Romelu Lukaku, as well as manager Antonio Conte.

Matri, who played for major teams including AC Milan, Lazio and Juventus in his career in Serie A, considers newly-appointed Nerazzurri head coach Simone Inzaghi to be a top tactician, and believes that the 45-year-old could lead the club to success.

Inter supporters will hope that the former Lazio manager can guide the team through a difficult period and get the best out the the still-strong squad which remains after the summer’s sales, and that he can have the team fighting for the title as Matri suggests.

On who he would consider Scudetto favourites, Matri stated “Usually those who are defending champions, even if Inter have sold important pieces like Conte, Lukaku and Hakimi.”

“Don’t underestimate Simone Inzaghi,” he continuedm “I’ve seen him work up close with Lazio and he’s really good.”
