Former Juventus midfielder Massimo Mauro believes that Inter are still the team to beet in Serie A as they look to defend last season’s Scudetto crown during the campaign now underway.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, the 59-year-old gave his view that while the season will be competitive, the Nerazzurri’s squad still makes them best poised to win it all.

Mauro, who played as a midfielder for the likes of Udinese and Napoli as well as the Bianconeri, believes that Inter’s defense in particular is an area in which they are stronger than the competition in Serie A, and that this advantage could prove crucial.

While the Nerazzurri lost two key players in the form of Achraf Hakimi and Lukaku this summer, as Mauro points out the stalwart defensive trio of Alessandro Bastoni, Stefan de Vrij, and Milan Skriniar and these could be the players they rely on as the season goes on.

“I still see Inter as favourites, who made money but kept the team’s level high,” he said, “They didn’t change the defense, which last year was the best in the league, while Juve, Roma, Napoli and Lazio have put their faith in a new technical project, but they have to come from behind. It will be a very interesting championship.”
