Legendary former striker Luca Toni believes that Inter are still the top team in Italy, and that they are the likeliest team to win Serie A.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, the World Cup winner gave his prediction that the Nerazzurri would successfully defend last season’s Scudetto crown.

Inter broke Juventus’s nine-season run of Scudetti last season to clinch the Scudetto for the first time in eleven years, representing a culmination of a major project under coach Antonio Conte.

However, the events of the summer, in which the club were forced to sell important players Achraf Hakimi and Romelu Lukaku after they had parted ways with head coach Antonio Conte, led to the feeling that their defense of the Scudetto would pose difficulties.

However, Toni, who played for Bayern Munich, Fiorentina, and Hellas Verona among other clubs, believes that after their summer business and early performances, the Nerazzurri remain the likeliest team to win the league again.

“Inter are the favourites,” he said. “In a market characterized by great difficulties, they lost a lot, but they were smart and invested in the right players for Simone Inzaghi’s game.”

He went on, “This season, they still have the advantage and have shown it in these first two matchdays.”

Of the Nerazzurri’s rivals he said, “Milan are still a step below. Juve are still going, even if it must be emphasized that Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure is important. He scored thirty goals, attracted more opponents, took away responsibility from his teammates. Now the others have to get in the front row.”
