Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi believes that the Nerazzurri can build their Scudetto challenge this season on the strength of their defenders if they use the right approach.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Radio Nerazzurra, as reported by L’Interista, Bergomi gave the view that his former side’s formidable defense will be the key to their season.

The Nerazzurri lost important players last season, but the defensive trio of Alessandro Bastoni, Milan Skriniar, and Stefan de Vrij remained, as did hard-working midfielders like Marcelo Brozovic and Nicolo Barella.

Bergomi believes that these players can replicate the solidity at preventing goals that was the key to last season’s Scudetto triumph under Antonio Conte, but that they must work hard to remain compact in front of their own goal as they had done under the departed Italian tactician.

The Nerazzurri legend believes that Conte’s successor Simone Inzaghi should seek to utilize these players in a similar manner to last season and prioritize defensive strength.

“The main strength of this team remains the defense,” he said, “which must remain compact and not lose the characteristics that allowed us to win the Scudetto. The three behind must be protected by the midfield, this aspect  will be fundamental for continuing the success of last season.”
