Italian football and its media spent time yesterday remembering the wonderful career of Inter legend Giacinto Facchetti, who passed away on the 4th September 2006.

Giacinto Facchetti was Inter’s left-back between 1960 and 1978, when he made a staggering 476 appearances for the Nerazzurri. Despite being a defender, he scored an incredible 59 goals during his time with the club.

As was much more common at the time, Giacinto Facchetti was a one-club player, never turning out for any team other than in the blue and black of Inter.

He also made 94 appearances for the Italian National Team, picking up three goals in the process.

He has been described by the Italian newspaper, Tuttosport, as the ‘backbone of Inter’. They also explain how he was one of the first full-backs to make the role much more fluid, bringing attacking play into the situation.

He won four league titles, two European cups and an Italian Cup during his career.
