Inter-linked Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez wanted to leave his current club in the summer transfer window, with the Uruguayan feeling that he had earned a move to a top club.

Speaking to Cagliari-based newspaper L’Unione Sarda, Rossoblu Sporting Director Stefano Capozucca spoke about the 25-year-old’s situation and explained that while no offers came in for the player which met the club’s valuation and so he did not move, the player’s wish was to leave.

Nandez has excelled for the Rossoblu since joining the Sardinian side from Argentine giants Boca Juniors in the summer of 2019, and he came onto the radar of a number of clubs with his performances.

Inter were among the clubs with the most significant interest in Nandez, with negotiations having been advanced with Cagliari on a move and the player clear on his desire to make the switch to the Nerazzurri.

In spite of this, no agreement with Inter or any other club was able to be reached in the end and the player remains with Cagliari.

“There were offers for Nandez, the last being for a €1 million paid loan from Napoli, which was offensive,” Capozucca said,” Cagliari certainly could not accept these offers. Nandez was bought from Boca for €18 million, so whoever wants to sign him must meet his valuation.”

Of the player’s desire he stated, “On a personal level it is understandable, everyone has the ambition to be able to improve. Nandez had a strong end to the season, he aspired to play for a top club competing for trophies.”

He went on, “He had meetings, including with Inter, Tottenham, Roma and Napoli. It was possible that he could leave. But he also conducted himself with a bad temper in the situation.”

He continued, “Nandez is nevertheless also a wonderful guy, as well as a great player.  In the end, common sense will prevail and, as shown against Spezia where he was one of the best players on the pitch, he will give his all for Cagliari.”

Capozucca also spoke about the situation of former Inter midfielder Radja Nainggolan, stating that “Nainggolan says he felt betrayed by me? I don’t want to start controversy. I sent Radja a message to thank him because last season he contributed significantly to our survival, on and off the pitch.”

“But there were other problems. Nainggolan did not arrive because the economic conditions made it impossible. There are liquidity ratios to be respected and we would not have been able to do it within the parameters set out by the league,” he explained.
