Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries could start in the Nerazzurri’s Champions League group stage opener against Real Madrid next Wednesday.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the 25-year-old is close to being ready to become a starter and that he could be handed a place in the starting eleven against the Spanish giants.

Dumfries has not yet featured much for the Nerazzurri, appearing off the bench against Genoa for a few minutes before remaining an unused substitute against Hellas Verona.

However, the 25-year-old has featured regularly for the Dutch national team during the international break, and his form in the World Cup qualifiers suggests that he could be ready to feature from the start for the Nerazzurri.

Head coach Simone Inzaghi will want to put out his strongest possible team as he looks to guide the Nerazzurri to the knockout round of the Champions League, and if he feels Dumfries is ready, the Dutchman could start.
