Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has suggested that Inter defender Zinho Vanheusden will improve a lot by playing for Genoa in Serie A this season, according to a report in the Italian media.

Speaking during a Belgium National team press conference, with quotes reported by FcINternews, Roberto Martinez explained that he thinks Zinho Vanheusden is a very good player and that with some consistent exposure to Serie A football this season, he will improve.

“Zinho is still very young, but he has many qualities, and I’m sure he will improve a lot with about twenty matches in Serie A.”

It was expected that Zinho Vanheusden may get a chance to start for Belgium against Belarus recently in the international break, but in the end he was not given the opportunity.

When asked why this happened, Roberto Martinez explained that it was down to squad balance rather than issue with the Inter defender specifically.

“It’s all a question of balance. He and other young people would have deserved to play, but I have to make choices, sometimes between 2 or 3 players in a single role.

“Performance in training counts, but in defence I wanted to review the trio that had restarted against Estonia. It is important to work on defensive systems.”

Zinho Vanheusden has spent most of his career at Standard Liege in Belgium, but he is spending this season on loan at Genoa.
