Inter are determined to tie midfielder Nicolo Barella down to a long-term contract, but are also considering him as the next captain of the club.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Italian international is due to be offered improved terms to remain at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, with Nerazzurri officials keen to ensure that he remains a pivotal part of the club going forward.

Barella’s existing deal, signed upon joining from Cagliari in 2020 after an initial season on loan, has a further three years remaining on it, but Inter want to give him a new deal that more accurately reflects his standing within the team.

Should the 24-year-old sign a new contract, the Nerazzurri have further plans for him and have identified him as a long-term candidate for the captaincy.

Current captain Samir Handanovic is entering the final year of his deal and will turn 38 next summer, potentially paving the way for the armband to be handed to Barella.
