Former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio believes that last season’s Scudetto triumph by Inter showed the value of goal-scoring contributions by midfielders.

Speaking to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, the Italian highlighted to contributions of midfielders to the Nerazzurri at key moments which allowed them to pick up points on their way to the Scudetto.

The goals and assists of Lautaro Martinez and particularly Romelu Lukaku were widely lauded in Inter’s march to the title last season, and gave the team a consistent route to goal through the entirety of the season.

However, in some important individual moments it was their teammates who came up with the important contributions which pushed them to the title.

While no midfielder in Inter’s squad managed to finish last season with a goal tally in the double digits, several popped up in key moments to make the team a more well-rounded threat than if they had been overly reliant on their strikers.

“Inter showed that the Scudetto can be won with the goals that come from midfield,” he said. “Barella, Brozovic, and Eriksen scored major goals in the final stretch of the season.”
