Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi is glad to have seen his team put in a strong performance in their return from the international break against Sampdoria, but disappointed that they could only take home a point.
Speaking to Inter TV, as reported by FCInterNews, the 45-year-old gave the view that the Nerazzurri should have made the most of the opportunities that came their way and won the encounter at the Marassi.
Inter led twice, through an excellent Federico Dimarco free-kick followed by a Lautaro Martinez volley from a strong Nicolo Barella run, but on both occasions they were pegged back by Sampdoria’s men.
Roberto D’Aversa’s men were determined and made life difficult for the Nerazzurri at the Marassi, finding an equalizer after both Inter goals rather than letting their heads drop, with left-back Tommaso Augello’s spectacular volley early in the second half for 2-2 the final goal of the match.
Inter, however, missed a number of presentable chances to take the lead a third time, something which the head coach rues.
“A draw that was tight,” is how Inzaghi characterized the clash, “in the second half after being pegged back to 2-2 we created a lot, we had to be more clinical on a couple of occasions and take the lead again.”
“We still have a bitter taste in our mouth, but now let’s think about Wednesday, a very important game. The team had a good game, but after taking the lead twice we must be expected to take home a victory,” he reflected.
He continued, “Then the two goals were out of nowhere, one took an unfortunate deflection and one shot from Augello.
“I only managed to spend yesterday with all the players available because of the national team commitments, until Thursday there were seven”
He went on, “We only managed a full tranining session yesterday, we knew that in the second half we would have had problems with fatigue, I had to make the changes soon and with Sensi’s injury we had to play with ten men.”
“Now we expect a fantastic game in front of our fans, the debut in the Champions League, we come up against a great team but we will try to prepare to be at our best,” he concluded about Wednesday’s clash with Real Madrid.
