Former Fiorentina midfielder Giancarlo Antognoni believes that Inter can make an impression in the Champions League this season.

Speaking to Italian news outlet Tuttomercatoweb, the former midfielder gave the view that the Nerazzurri will have what it takes can be successful in Europe’s top competition this season, as can their city rivals AC Milan.

Inter have had a poor recent record in the Champions League despite their successes in Serie A during the period, failing to progress beyond the group stage in their last three seasons in the competition.

The club will have made progression to the knockout rounds a major priority this season, and coach Simone Inzaghi will hope that he can see the best of his squad in their upcoming group stage matches.

Antognoni believes that the Nerazzurri, as well as the Rossoneri who make their return to the Champions League after a number of years away, can do well in the competition this season.

“Milan and Inter can do well,” he explained of this year’s Champions league, “Atalanta are not quite at their best but they always remain competitive. Juve are still Juve even if they are not doing well in the league, they can make a strong impression in the Champions League.”
