Legendary former Inter midfielder Nicola Berti has given his view that midfielder Stefano Sensi shouldn’t have taken the pitch yesterday against Sampdoria given the risk of injury.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, the 54-year-old was critical of the decision to bring Sensi on given that he was not a hundred percent in terms of his fitness, with the 26-year-old having had to come off in considerable pain after a clash of knees.

Sensi was brought on for Hakan Calhanoglu midway through the second half, and the midfielder will be disappointed to have had to come off with his injury after trying to play on following the challenge with Sampdoria defender Maya Yoshida.

The midfielder could miss considerable time as he recovers from the setback, and Berti believes that the decision to put him on the pitch represents a mistake by coach Simone Inzaghi.

“Let’s say that this gives the title rivals breathing room,” Berti said of the result, “we can’t always win. But yes, I think of it as two points lost.”

He went on, “I don’t have so much of a problem with the match, in the end they could have won. But I have doubts about Sensi. I wouldn’t [have allowed him to play], he had not returned from the national team fully fit, it was a small mistake.”
