Alessandro Bastoni could be set to start tomorrow’s Champions League group stage opener against Real Madrid on the bench.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, who report that the 22-year-old will likely not be ready to start the match as he has only just returned from a thigh injury.

The Nerazzurri have already had a few significant injury issues affect them this campaign, with Stefano Sensi’s knee injury picked up against Sampdoria on the weekend the most obvious, but Bastoni also missed that match.

The 22-year-old picked up a minor thigh strain while on international duty with the Italian national team over the break and was not ready for the weekend’s Serie A fixture, although he is now recovered and fully training.

It remains to be seen whether the defender will be fully fit in time for tomorrow’s clash with Real, but it could be the case that manager Simone Inzaghi decides to rest him on the bench from the start rather than risking including him in the starting eleven.
