Inter lost the opening group stage match of the Champions League at home against Real Madrid despite playing better and creating the most chances.

Thibaut Courtois showed why he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and pulled off great save after great save whilst Inter’s finishing was lacking.

Samir Handanovic – 5.5: Samir has decided to talk the talk, but his performances have no bite. Looked very nervous on the ball as usual and his team felt it. No fault on the goal.

Milan Skriniar – 7: Another game where Skriniar decides when to win the ball and does it. Looked dangerous on corners and only beaten for pace once all night. Superman.

Stefan De Vrij – 6.5: Nervy start but showed his cool, calm personality and played with a lot of class and freedom there on. Found the midfielders with ease. Renewal please?

Alessandro Bastoni – 6: Bastoni started after being out of the trip to Genoa at the weekend. Played with a lot of class and his understanding with Perisic led to some great moves.

Matteo Darmian – 6: Tried his best and with Skriniar by his side in defense, they pretty much sealed that wing. Lacked pace that was needed in attack against this Real Madrid.

Nicolo Barella – 6: For the first few minutes his teammates couldn’t find him, then he got the ball and started creating some great chances. Not much to do defensively.

Marcelo Brozovic – 7.5: After a couple of difficult games in Serie A, Brozo got a little more space tonight and he made it count. Probably his best performance for Inter in Europe.

Hakan Calhanoglu – 6: Does all the right things and even helps in defending when the team is under pressure. Just that final pass doesn’t click consistently. Decent outing.

Ivan Perisic – 6.5: A lot of Interisti wanted Dimarco to start on the left wing. Taken off a bit too soon as he had the left wing under control at least defensively. Good signs.

Edin Dzeko – 6: Very unlucky in the first half where he could have easily scored 1 or 2 goals on another night. Linked up play very well and created chances for his team.

Lautaro Martinez – 6.5: Lautaro’s contract renewal can’t come soon enough. That was a great game by Il Toro and his linkup play has suddenly gone to another level this summer.

Federico Dimarco – 6: Took a few minutes to get with the pace. Once he settled, he provided more attacking threat. When Real attacked he didn’t look as secure as Perisic.

Denzel Dumfries – 5.5: Just like Dimarco he struggled to deal with the wing play by an experienced Real Madrid team. Took too long to release the final pass when he forward.

Arturo Vidal – 5.5: Played a decent game but didn’t have the impact he usually has had so far this season. Struggled to get on the ball and create any chances to score.

Joaquin Correa – 5: Virtually no impact from Correa this time. Not his best performance as he struggled to hold up play or manufacture any moves. Still settling in at Inter.

Matias Vecino – N/A: Perhaps the most surprising substitution tonight. Fell asleep on the goal as he let Camavinga through to create that chance for Rodrygo.

Simone Inzaghi – 6: The game went almost to plan for Simone till he made the subs. Changing both wingbacks allowed Real to get some control. The Barella sub cost 3 points.

Daniel Siebert – 5: Fell for all the tricks from the Real players. They used all their experience, and he missed a few yellow cards. Still had some sort of control of the game.

Inter – 6: Did everything but seal the win. Must be a little more cynical in front of goal and also at 0-0 in the 90th minute. Substitutes didn’t have positive impact.
